Eating for Training and Weight Loss

The toughest times for me to lose weight is when I’m training for something. I find that the balance b/w creating a calorie deficit while having the energy to exercise effectively is a real tough one. I’ve tried a few different methods but I find it hard to stick to them b/c I haven’t created that as a habit. I’m trying to be proactive this year with my diet, I’m not really losing weight at the moment (expecting a stay the same tonight on the scale) but I know it is at the fault of my stress eating and not of the above. But the past couple of days I’ve noticed that I’m eating all my APs plus some b/c I’m hungry (and I’m not stressed, well I wasn’t – I need to hear today or tomorrow about the job since they have Friday off, so starting to get stressed!). So back to basics in terms of eating for training and weight loss. There are 2 sources I go to time and time again. This Runner’s World article and Nancy Clark’s Nutrition for Athletes Book. Both state very similar things with Runner’s World actually giving out eating schedules with percentages.

Since some days I’m doing 2 a days I want a schedule that will keep me fueled for both, and neither have anything on how to eat for those days. Plus I wanted a schedule that I can stick to everyday – I think it will make a more lasting habit that way. So here is what I came up with:

Breakfast – 25% of daily points
Lunch 1 – 25% of daily points
Lunch 2 – 20%
Dinner – 25%

One snack – 5% that is moved around. Before Breakfast as a pre exercise. Or in between breakfast and Lunch 1.

My evening snack will be using 50% of my activity points earned. Which means on days I’m not working out I’ll need to sacrifice points elsewhere (probably Lunch 2). The days before long workouts (anything over 1 hour), I’ll use some of my saved up APs for dinner and evening snack.

Last night was a night to remember. I got home, made a simple dinner (buffalo chicken sammies with red pepper strips). Read for a bit. At 7:45, I knew I needed to start getting ready to go for my “hills” training session. Well I really didn’t feel like it. But I really did feel like getting out there. I decided to go for an hour long walk. When I was getting ready I figured, well I may as well just wearing running clothes and my running shoes in case I feel like running! Well pretty much as soon as I was out there my legs were itching to just run. So I played it really simple – let my ipod and mood decide for me! I walk/ran out for 30 minutes and then turned out and came home. On my way out I passed my planned hill, so I ran up. On my back I did the same. My goal had been 5 times, but 2 is not too shabby. Especially considering I ended up walk/running for 7km (no garmin, it was dead, but since I’m tracking mileage here I mapped it out)! Well I really walk/ran for 6.5km in 50 minutes and then slowly walked another .5 km in 10 minutes to cool down. In that 50 minutes I ran about 35-40min and walked 10-15 minutes. Plus the hour just blew by. And I felt pretty amazing when I got home. Will definitely be doing that again!

The Status Quo

So far so good. But if I were to read back the past month I have a feeling every Tuesday I write a “I’m doing great post” followed by a Friday no post or “I’m not doing so good” post. Oh yeah and I can’t forget the “I gained weight” post pretty much every Thursday. So yeah come this time of week I usually feel like a hypocrite!

Anyways. The day did go well yesterday. I was very busy. I had a lunch meeting where we ate at the end which left me 15 minutes to eat until my 1pm meeting! The lunch spread was baked pasta, Caesar salad (dressing on side), bread, cookie and desert platter. I think I did well here. I filled ¾ of my plate with salad, put a tad of dressing on my plate, and the other ¼ had some of the baked pasta. I felt like I inhaled in since I was starving and on a timeline! No bread or desert! I’m happy with my choices there.

After being in back to back to back meetings and interviews I was wiped by the end of the day. But for once I didn’t let it get in my way. I got home and just kept going. Threw in a load of laundry, made a quick Asian marinade for chicken, did a 40 minute circuit style Strength training session (warm up, 6 circuits each with a different focus, cool down), copiloting dinner (I was in charge of veggies and corn, hubby in charge of meat and potatoes on the BBQ while cooking I also cleaned the kitchen, put laundry in dryer/hang), hopping on the bike (leisurely ride – 60min for 15km with a few intervals thrown in there), got home showered, made lunches, put away laundry. My night wasn’t all work though! From 9-9:30 I watched TV (Les Stroud’s Survive This) and from 9:30-10 I read in the kitchen, then moved the reading upstairs to bed! By 10:30 I was out like a light!

This morning was my usual start to a Tuesday – in the pool! 1500m in 50minutes. I’m really trying to break the 1400m! So I made sure to get to the pool on time to get in a full 45 minutes. Unfortunately I had some lane mates that caused me to go slower or wait a little bit longer than normal so I knew I had to stay longer to break the 1400m barrier! It means my hair is in a pony tail today but that’s okay! This is what I did:

200m warm up
4x25 stroke count (30 worst, 26 best)
4x25 breath left, breath right
10x100m leave on 2:45
100m cool down

1500m total.

If the weather holds I’ll get out for a run tonight, otherwise I’ll do it tomorrow morning. My body feels like toast right now – arms and legs are v.tired after a tough couple of sessions, but in a good way! My legs will be even more mad at me after the run since I’m planning on doing some hills!

Reflections

So the end of last week didn’t exactly go as planned. Fast food was eaten Friday for lunch. And no trails were run after work.

I did also find out that I won’t be finding out until this week! I’m really hopeful that all this delay is more of an onboarding delay vs a delay in declining me, b/c I would hope that they would’ve declined me already!

So another rollercoaster week to try and get through.

All I can do is try and get through.

And with planning, instead I’ve been focusing on setting goals for myself to plan for.

My triathlon is coming up – only 10 weeks to go! I’m not really following a training plan for it per se. Instead I just have some guidelines that I’m looking to follow. Each week this is my goal:

1-2 swims per week (1 endurance, 1 speed, or 1 hour long workout each week with an endurance main set, then a speed main set)
2 runs (1 hill or speed, 1 “long”)
2 bike (1 short with a transition run tagged on, 1 long)

Every 3 weeks I’m going to do a brick workout. Trying to get as close to 20km bike, 5km run each time.
I know the course and I know I need practice biking on rolling hills and running on hills. Since the entire first 10k is pretty much uphill, I know that I need at least 2-3 rides on similar country roads. It will be hard to fit in though with this summer being crazy busy!

And since I can’t plan anything else – I’m already thinking of a fall goal! I’ve done some reflecting on my 2 half marathons. The first one I trained for (the Toronto Half in Oct 2006) I actually quite enjoyed. Training wasn’t where it should’ve been, I had planned on 3-4 runs a week but in the end only got in about 2 (my short runs and my long runs). It was the summer leading up to our wedding plus training didn’t happen on our honeymoon at all. But I was still able to meet my goal of beating 2hrs:30min with a chip time of 2:28:27. Just as a note I ran all my long runs at an 8 and 2 interval (run 8, walk 2) and my longest run was 20km. My second one I trained more consistently with 2-3 runs per week plus basketball. I didn’t have any major plans that summer so that definitely helped. But I hated training. I was running 10 and 1s and my longest run was supposed to me 12miles but only ended up being 10 miles (and a couple of those). I also had a week of vacation in there where I only ran a couple of time. Plus I rolled my ankle a few times while playing basketball which sidelined me too.

I did not meet my goal of a PR and my A goal of 2:15. In fact I did worse. 2:34. And my legs were really sore the entire race. I only switched to 10 and 1s to get faster and b/c in my mind there was a smaller stigma with 1 min walking vs 2 min walking. Funny how I ended up running the race slower and hated long runs after that. Ever since that half marathon the longest I’ve run is 10km and I certainly haven’t done too many of those!

So I’m thinking of doing a half marathon in November – the Hamilton Road2Hope. But I can be fickle. I don’t know if I’m planning this b/c I really want to do it or if I’m planning it for lack of nothing else to plan! Come August and I’ll know better. But what this reflection has shown me is that I want to run one more at least, doing the 8 and 2s to see if that it was the 10 and 1’s. So there will definitely be another half marathon in my future!

Meeting Expectations

So yeah, just like expected weigh in last night wasn’t pretty! A gain of 1.8 lbs. Ouch. But I deserved it. And I always find that if I misbehave and then lose or stay the same then I continue misbehaving. It just means that I really need to get me act together.

Well I certainly started today off right – in the pool doing some hardcore speed! I only had 30 minutes today since I had a morning meeting but it still felt great!

100m warm up
2x50m drills – pull, kick
2x50m medium speed
4x50m 25m fast, 25m recover
4x50m 25m recover, 25 fast
4x50m all fast
100m cool down

1000m total

This is definitely one of my new fave pool workouts!

I can already tell you though that this is going to be a tough day to get through. My nerves are going insane, my stomach is really anxious and nervous and I really just want to hear about the job. I always wonder if anyone gets like this – all crazy like! I wish I didn’t but I’ve always been like this so I don’t think I will be changing at all. Today we are going out for lunch so at least that makes it easy. My key will be tomorrow and not eating!

Tonight we are hoping to get in the saddle again for another ride – we need to bike 19k to reach our 50k goal! Tuesdays and Thursdays are turning into double workout days! That is the great thing about morning swim workouts is that it means I don’t have to work out, or it means that I can run or bike since swimming is mostly arms! Thank goodness b/c my arms are sore from this morning’s workout!

Hindsight is Twenty-Twenty

Marble Slab is so yummy – especially after a 4.5k run in 30 minutes! And they have kids sizes now too! The only 2 times I went they didn’t so I was very excited to see that a) b/c it is cheaper, b) b/c it is healthier, c) b/c I’ll eat the whole original but I never feel great after! The kids size was the perfect amount. I got my usual – coffee with coconut and peanut butter cup. Wow what a way to end the day!

Especially after my lunch being a complete and utter FAIL! I had made pasta with spinach and a can of mackerel in a spicy tomato sauce. Well, there were just too many bones. I know they are good for you and all but after a couple of bites I just couldn’t do it anymore. So I got a ham and cheese sandwich from the cafeteria.

Today is an off day and weigh in day. I’m pretty much guaranteed a gain due to my shenanigans last week. I understand myself and I understand that I get in those funks but it upsets me more right now since I’ve been trying to get past this “plateau” thing I’ve been on. So to gain weight to lose again, and to have to continue fighting to lose to finally get past it seems like a mtn that I have to overcome. But some progress, I know starting today I can hear about the job. I’ve started to get in the funk. The voices started calling my name to go out to eat today but I persisted and ate my planned leftover stirfry and yogurt. And that’s all I can do right now, I can’t go into the past and change it. But what I can do is learn from it, recognize the signs and try to overcome them. That’s all I can ask of myself right now it terms of that stuff.

I just hope that through the rest of this week while I wait to hear that I am able to resist. Either tomorrow or Friday I’ll be going out for lunch (my once a week policy) and as long as I stick to that and try to curtail stress eating than I can encounter! Or please let me find out that I get the job soon!!

Healthy Living

Healthy Day One: check.

As soon as I got home I got to my 10 minute bootcamp (I did a free on demand full body one). Then made a healthy dinner – grilled cast iron pan frittata – wow delicious. Then we finished the day with a 31km 80minute bike ride that was absolutely amazing. We took the bike trail down to the waterfront trail and it was just a great way to finish the day! The hubby even suggested that we have a goal of biking 50km each week. I totally am on board for that! 20km to go this week!

Now on to healthy day two! Tuesdays have been a double duty day, and today is no different!

Healthy Start to the day: check. 1400m swim
Healthy Breakfast: leftover delicious frittata.
Healthy Snack: no check – forgot to pack my snacks. I had 2 peek frean cookies (80 cal total)
Healthy Lunch: check – made an experimental lunch – pasta mixed with a can of smoked mackerel in spicy tom. sauce with spinach
Healthy Dinner: check. Stir fry.
Healthy Activityx2: check. 5km run
Healthy Postrun fuel: if you count ice cream!

Funkified

So I’m in a big ole funk here. Last week was a total disaster. I thought I had sort of mastered stress eating, but apparently not all kinds of stress eating!

Monday started off good. I ran my first 10k of the season – it was hard I have to say but I got ‘er done.

Then Tuesday rolled around. The day I was supposed to find out if I got the job or not. I started the day in the pool – proud of myself that I hadn’t let the not knowing where I’ll be in a month, usually that throws me for a loop not being able to plan things out and that results in me not doing much of anything, especially anything healthy! Well I must’ve jinxed myself. By lunch time I was done. The waiting game totally got to me. For lunch instead of my brown bag healthy lunch I ate a harvey’s cheese burger and fries. On a day where I knew we would be going out for dinner too. I didn’t end up hearing anything. I drove into Toronto that night for a concert (first stop Taco Bar in Kensington for tacos, then the National at Massey Hall, amazing amazing show). With all the construction going on we got home late and I didn’t hit the sack until 1am.

Wednesday was the same old thing but worse b/c now I was tired. Planned on eating Tuesday’s brown bag lunch but again ate out – a burrito. Didn’t hear anything. Emailed to inquire as to when I should expect an update.

Thursday morning – didn’t go swimming. Heard that the VP is out until Tuesday so I won’t hear until the end of the next week (now end of this week). Again stressed about life – what if I don’t get it, my contract is running out… Ate lunch out, again, goat cheese and chicken pasta.

Friday – doing better. Ate out again for lunch b/c this was a planned lunch. Thai food. Went home and got things ready for dinner. Home made pizza (so yummy, 1 slice of bacon, mushrooms, peppers, spinach, cheese on homemade crust). Knowing the weekend is here did help me out a bit started concentrating on getting over the funk.

Saturday – no workout but lots of running around. Grocery Shopping, Leftover Pizza for lunch, cleaning, reorganizing, lots of gardening, date night. We love Date Nights. Saturday night we made a very gourmet meal! We started with a salad and zucchini fritters. Took an hour break. Then made steak with red wine reduction, roasted potatoes, roasted veggies (asparagus for me, red pepper for the hubs). It was delicious. We love cooking at home b/c it allows us to take breaks and make things how we like. Plus there is no waiter rushing us, no exorbitant prices for wine or salads. Just the 2 of us, good wine, good food and great conversation!

Sunday – sleep in day! The first thing I did when I got up was make muffins! I had grated an extra zucchini yesterday for this purpose. I made these Zucchini Nut Banana Chocolate Chip Muffins. I followed the recipe exactly but next will add some more honey b/c I could use them a tad sweeter. We had hoped to go for a hike with friends but it was a planned 20km loop and with the threat of thundershowers we didn’t want to take a chance! So instead we did some work on our two upstairs “guest” rooms (with the new bed and dresser we inherited last week). And then went on a fun bike ride. We did some “challenges”, where the person behind could challenge the other to a race to a designated point. It was good fun (btw I lost out 2 to 1 in favour of the hubs, but my one win was the toughest b/c it was the longest race!) and was a great way to do some intervals! We ended up doing 14.5km in about 45 minutes. Made home made buffalo chicken strips which I had in a wrap with a side of grilled veggies.

Today I gave myself a pep talk. I can’t let this get me in a funk. I find it tough not to be able to think in terms of next month (or the months following) but I’m just going to have to deal with it! I don’t want to let this waiting game result in a lot of weight gain!

This week my goal is to live life how I want to life live. So that includes eating a well balanced diet and moving moving moving! I shouldn’t neglect myself like this!

So this is how I have/will start the week off:

Healthy Breakfast – check. ¾ cup of 2% yogurt with ½ cup strawberries, ½ banana, 1-2 T walnuts, 1/3 cup dry oats, 1-2 T granola with a splash of honey. Oh my deliciousness!
Healthy Snack – check. 1 apple with a T of dark chocolate pb.
Healthy Lunch – check. Another buff. Chicken wrap with leftover roasted red pepper and tomato soup.
Healthy Snack – check. 1 ZNBCC muffin.
Healthy Dinner – check. Frittata with leftover roasted potatoes, veggies and cheese in it. With 1 slice of toast. And salad.
Movement – check. Another bike ride with the hubby. Planning on 20-25km!

Then I will have this continue on the rest of the week! Fingers and toes and everything crossed that first I find out about the job and second that I get the job!
